Diwali is the Hindu’s festival, it is also known as the festival of lights. We celebrate Diwali on the occasion of Lord Ram coming home after 14 years of exile. We all put lights at every corner of the country and people shop a lot of gifts and sweets in exchange of showing love and reverence.    

There are a total of 5 days of celebration in India. As we start it from the beginning of Dhanteras, which marks the five-day’s celebration and on this propitious day of Dhanteras, we buy and bring in new metal items, especially silver and gold. 

During these five days all the rituals are being followed in order to bring prosperity and peace with blessings of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha, are worshipped on this special occasion.  

It is celebrated on the new moon day which is also known as Amavasya, this day is the most significant day of these five-days of festivities. This day is known as Lakshmi Puja, Lakshmi-Ganesh Puja and Diwali Puja. 

Here is the list of the five days of Diwali celebration:

1. November 10: Dhanteras or Dhan Trayodashi

According to Drik Panchang, the Dhantera’s puja muhurat will commence at 5:47 pm and end at 7:43 pm on November 10, 2023. The muhurat will  be around for 1 hour 56 minutes. On the occasion of Dhanteras, we worship Lord Kubera and Goddess Lakshmi and while praying we offer them new metal items bought the same day itself. 

As people believe that wealth and prosperity will come their way in massive amounts. We also lighten the two diyas on the entrance of our home.

2. November 11: Narak Chaturdashi or Chhoti Diwali

Narak Chaturdashi, the day just before Diwali, also known as Chhoti Diwali,  will be commemorated on 11 November, 2023. The ‘deepdaan shubh muhurat’ will commence at 05:29 pm and end at 8:07 pm on the same day. 

3. November 12: Diwali

As per the Drik Panchang, On the occasion of Diwali the Lakshmi Puja muhurat will commence at 5:39 pm and end at 7:35 pm on November 12, 2023. The main festive day is Diwali of these five-days, when people perform Lakshmi & Ganesh  Puja. The main celebration will take place on Diwali.  

4. November 13: Govardhan Puja

The Govardhan Puja muhurat will commence at 06:43 am and end at 08:52  am on November 13, 2023. Govardhan Puja is being celebrated a day after Diwali. We all worship Lord Krishna on the occasion of Govardhan Puja. In Mathura, It is believed that Lord Krishna saved the lives of the residents of Mathura from Lord Indra by lifting a mountain known as ‘Govardhan’.

5. November 14: Bhai Dooj

The last and final day of celebration is Bhai Dooj which strengthens the special bond of brothers and sisters. This year Bhai Dooj is taking place on November 14, 2023. On this occasion, the Aparahna time will commence at  01:10 pm and end at 03:19 pm. However, there’s some confusion between  the dates & timing of Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj. But according to the Drik Panchang, both of the occasions will clearly be celebrated on November 14, 2023.
